- Mariko Watabe, born and trained in Japan as a classical Japanese Kabuki Style dancer and musician, has been a performer and instructor of Dance, Vocal, Shamisen (String), and Narimono (Percussion) instruments in Japan and the United States.
Dance & Music Biography

Instructor Mariko Watabe is a member of the Katada-Ryu School of Narimono Music, the Samon-Kai Association of Nagauta Music, and the Bando-Kai Essemble of Japanese Classical Dance in Japan.
Since 1974, she has introduced Kabuki dance and music to American audiences nationwide. She moved to New Jersey in 1989 and has given performances, lectures, and demonstrations in schools and colleges throughout the United States. She founded a New Jersey Nonprofit Cultural Organization, the Tomofuji-Kai Japanese Dance and Music Ensemble in 1996, and serves as the current director.

Please feel free to contact us if you're interested. Multiple Lesson Locations in Manhattan NYC (New York City), New Jersey, and Long Island. We also offer private lessons for more busy scheduled students.
You do not need your own instruments to start, you can just borrow one of ours in the beginning. However, it is best if you have your own instrument to practice with at home and get used to, in that case, we also offer services to help you buy one.
If you are interested in learning the basis of playing any type of Shamisen, please contact us regarding Shamisen Lessons or a Trial Shamisen Lesson. Mariko Watabe is one of the few school accredited Shamisen Sensei (Teacher) in New York or East Coast United States Area.
